The conventional wisdom is that a high-security door should open towards the threat to improve resistance from blunt force attack tools like battering rams and sledge hammers. However, in practice the advantages of this are almost negligible, so we typically recommend that clients select the swing direction based on traffic flow and ergonomics.
The Hidden Door Store can provide doors with very small clearances, but we recommend that the client use a tape measure to decide what the minimum clear width is that they can accept. It is important to remember that the clear width is the size of the largest object that can fit through the opening when the door is in the open position, NOT the size of the rough door opening or the size of the door slab that it is replacing. For commercial applications the door is required to be ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant which means that it must have a clear width of at least 32”, a threshold of less than ½”, and possibly other requirements as well depending on the layout.
Yes, they can be practical for everyday use when properly designed and installed with quality components.
We do both styles. When the body of the door lies inside the opening it is called a “built-in” configuration and when it appears to be in front of the wall – resembling a piece of furniture that is placed against the wall – then it is called a “free-standing” configuration, even though both configurations are semi-permenantly affixed to the wall. In contrast, since mirror doors are designed to mimic the appearance of an ordinary mirror that would be hung on the wall, they are nearly always flush-mounted.

I LOVE my hidden closet and door! Some friends have asked why I need a hidden closet. Well, I like to keep certain things private. I am able to keep my nice jewelry in this closet in the drawers of the secretary or on top of it in a jewelry box. Some I still have in the safe.
